Not sure which pump is right?

We make two personal pumps. Both use the same closed-system HygieniKit and the same CustomFit flanges, so the choice comes down to how and where you express.

Compare Ameda pumps

Both come with a 25mm flange. If expressing is uncomfortable, a different size usually fixes it.

Comfort starts here

Get the right fit

Every kit comes with a 25mm flange, which suits many but not everyone. If pumping feels uncomfortable, or a lot of areola is drawn into the tunnel, a different size usually helps.

Ameda CustomFit flanges and soft inserts run from 11mm to 36mm and swap straight into your existing kit.

How to measure your flange size

Caring for your pump at home

After every use

Rinse the parts that touch milk with cool water, wash by hand in warm soapy water, rinse and air dry.

Three parts to leave alone

The tubing, tubing adapter and adapter cap never touch milk. Do not wash, boil or microwave them.

Replacing parts

Valves and diaphragms wear first. If suction drops off, check those before anything else.

Before you start

Wash your hands well with soap and water before handling your kit.

Check the parts for cracks, chips, colour changes or wear before and after every use, as these can affect how the kit works. Replace anything that looks damaged.

Cleaning after every use

  1. Take your kit apart.
  2. Rinse the parts that come into contact with milk (the breast flange, diaphragm, valve and bottle) with cool water to remove any milk residue.
  3. Wash gently by hand in warm, soapy water. Do not use solvents or abrasives.
  4. Rinse well with warm, clean water.
  5. Do not insert anything into the valve while cleaning.
  6. Allow the parts to air dry on a clean surface.
  7. The large plastic pieces (the breast flange and bottle) can be washed on the top rack of a standard household dishwasher.

Three parts to leave alone

The tubing, tubing adapter and adapter cap do not come into contact with milk. Do not wash, boil or microwave them.

The closed-system design keeps the tubing dry, which is why there is nothing to clean on that side of the kit.

Sanitising

If you would like to sanitise your pre-cleaned parts, Ameda CleanEase microwave steam bags are made for the job. Parts must be washed first. Any milk residue left on them will bake on during the cycle.

Cycle time depends on your microwave's wattage: above 1100W, 1.5 minutes; 800 to 1100W, 3 minutes; 600 to 750W, 5 minutes. Fill with 60mL of drinking-quality water and seal the zip fully. The bag and its contents will be very hot on removal.

Putting it back together

Once everything is clean and dry, refer to the diagram on the front of your kit's packaging for assembly.

When you are ready to express, centre your nipple in the breast flange and let the flange rest against your breast so it forms a gentle seal.

This is a short guide. The Instructions for Use supplied with your kit are the full version. Please keep them. Ameda Australia, 1300 643 633.

Questions we're asked most

How do I know which flange size I need?

Measure your nipple diameter before pumping, then choose a tunnel 2 to 3mm larger. Our sizing tool does the working out for you and tells you exactly which flange or insert to order.

Can I use my kit with a different pump?

Ameda milk collection kits are designed to work with Ameda electric breast pumps. They aren't intended for use with other brands.

Which parts wear out, and when do I replace them?

Valves and diaphragms see the most use and are the usual first replacement. If suction drops off, check those first. Inspect all parts before and after use for cracks, chips or wear, and replace anything damaged.

How do I look after my kit?

Only the parts that touch your milk need washing, and three parts never need cleaning at all. The full steps are in Caring for your pump at home, further up this page.

My pump doesn't feel as strong as it used to

Check the valves and diaphragms first. They wear with use and are the most common cause. Make sure the diaphragm is seated properly and that nothing is cracked or torn. If the suction still seems low, give us a call on 1300 643 633.

There's moisture in my tubing

The closed-system barrier is designed to keep milk and moisture out of the tubing. If you do find moisture inside, stop using that tubing and contact us on 1300 643 633 rather than washing or drying it.

Can Ameda help me with feeding problems?

Not directly. That isn't our expertise, and it wouldn't be right for us to advise on it. We can help with anything to do with your pump or kit on 1300 643 633. For feeding itself, see the support options below.

How long does expressed milk keep?

Storage times depend on where you keep it. The Australian Breastfeeding Association publishes the current guidance, and we link to it from Support for mums.
